FIBA U16 AfroBasket: Rwanda face Algeria in opener

Thursday Group ATunisia vs Mali 9:15 amMaurtius vs Mozambique 5pm Group BRwanda vs Algeria 11:30amEgypt vs Madagascar 1:45pm Rwanda U-16 boys’ team kicks off their campaign at this year’s fifth edition of FIBA Africa Under-16 Championships today against Algeria in Group B opener. The game is scheduled for 11:30 at Phoenix Gymnasium. The competition also serves as a qualifier for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018 in Argentina. Rwanda touched base in Vacoas-Phoenix on Wednesday and the draw ceremony was held later the same day. Moise Mutokambali’s side was drawn in Group B along with defending champions and record title winners Egypt, Algeria and Madagascar. Group A consists of hosts Mauritius, Mozambique, Tunisia and Mali. The tournament’s opening game will pit continental giants Tunisia and Mali at 9:15am. The top two teams from each group will advance to semi-finals which will be played in a knockout format, while the bottom two teams from each group in the group phase will play the classification games for positions 5-8. The third-place Game and the final will be played on the last day of the tournament. Rwanda is representing Zone V at the biennial event for the second time in a row after successfully defending the Zone V FIBA U-16 Africa Championships last month in Mombasa, Kenya. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
